The US sitcom, about the team behind a fashion magazine called Blush , began its episode run in March Laura San Giacomo was Maya Gallo, the fiery, feminist journalist who takes up a job at her father's fashion magazine, Blush. She joins the magazine when she is fired from her TV job after messing with a condescending news anchor's teleprompter as revenge. Jack Gallo, played by George Segal, is Maya's workaholic father and Blush magazine's owner and publisher. He is four times divorced and, for the first half of the series, married to Maya's high school friend. He has a running competition with Donald Trump as to who is smarter, richer and better at giving gifts. Prior to Just Shoot Me! Segal was known for his roles in films such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Nina is obsessed with her age and looks and has an obsession with partying all night long to hold on to elements of her former life. She later starred in the final season of Frasier and in the comedy series Hot in Cleveland.

Already nervous about her first day, Maya arrives at the offices of Blush ready to transform the magazine into something she can be proud of. Since neither her dad nor Finch thought to mention it, Maya's new position at the magazine comes as a surprise for Nina and Elliott. Yet, she sees things going her way when Jack overrules the staff and lets her pursue a controversial story on the exploitation of low wage foreign workers. Meanwhile, as Jack is unveiling her new office and presenting her with the job's many perks, Nina, Elliott and Finch plot their survival under the magazine's new leadership. As Maya continues to be overwhelmed with the finer things that her new job provides, Nina marshals Elliott and Finch to confront Jack about hiring his daughter.

As a young girl, Maya went to Woodbridge , an exclusive school in New York City, where she accidentally burned the west wing. The Headmaster thinks that the accident was Maya's way of acting out because of her father's absence. During the pilot, she is working as a journalist for a television news channel.
